What is the Dublin Food Co-op?

Photo of the the Dublin Food Co-op's Saturday marketWe are Ireland's leading location to buy organic, local, Fairtrade and sustainable products.

But that's not all! Our co-operative principles and member ownership mean that we're much more than a farmers' market - we're a true food democracy in the heart of the city.

Our roots and evolution

Our beginnings lie with a group of friends involved in a campaign to stop the Government building a Nuclear Power Station at Carnsore Point, Co Wexford. Together, they founded a co-operative in 1983 to provide organic food and other sustainable living products to owner-members, sharing the benefits of buying in bulk.

From small beginnings in Temple Bar, Dublin Food Co-op evolved toward weekly trading in St. Andrew's Resource Centre on Pearse Street, where we remained for over two decades. Since the space did not allow for either expansion or permanence, later years saw the start of what became a long search for a new home. We finally moved in July 2007.

Since establishing our own premises (also available for hire), we now open twice weekly and organise or host a growing number of events.

In short, Dublin Food Co-op is a vibrant community that goes far beyond food.

True to the co-operative tradition, we offer an alternative to the profit-oriented business model - surplus funds are used wholly to benefit members by reducing prices and improving services and facilities. The Co-op is 100% owned and controlled by its members. JOIN US!.
